Turley, Cória & Domäne Serrig

Cali White Zin, Oregon Pinot & German Grand Cru Riesling

Midnight Tasting August 25th 2024

No. 1 • Turley, Rosé 2023 • Zinfandel • California •

Inspiration : ‘classy, not trashy’

Color : very bright, watermelon jolly rancher red/pink with and orangish hue. Clean & pristine.

Aroma : very aromatic, smells juicy, a little candy sweetness.

Taste : up front, bright candy juice to then evolve into a clean, dry southern french inspired rosé.

Big Takeaways

  • California winery working mostly with Zinfandel & P. Syrahs. This is their rosé of zinfandel…aka…white zin.

  • Upfront flavors of juicy fruits, candy sweetness to then have it finish dry and clean, reminding of a southern French rosé.

  • A fun bait-and-switch…in a good way. Have fun with your wine.

Hints

If you are ever ‘gifted’ Sutter Home White Zin…put it to good use catching all your fruit flies.

No. 2 • Cória, Alma de Cória Grand Reserve 2018 • Pinot Noir • Willamette Valley, Oregon •

Inspiration : ‘seirous’

Color : rich hue, royal purple, clean and pristine.

Aroma : quite aromatic, dark, juicy, brambly, woodsy with some spice like cedar and boxwood. Purple florals including violets.

Taste : dark cherries and spice, sweet spices, woodsy, tobacco and a touch of vanilla. Lengthy finish. Dances on the edge of bitter without crossing the line.

Big Takeaways

  • Family ran winery since 1988 working with all own grapes. Daughter, Aurora is the winemaker.

  • Grand Reserve is made from selected plots of vines, Pommard & Dijon clones, aged 27 months in French Oak, 66% new.

  • Dark, juicy, brambly and spicy…more serious drinking Pinot.

Hints

Excellent for a holiday dinner, or a Duck pairing.

No. 3 • Domäne Serrig ‘Vogelsang’ Grosse Lage 2020• Rieslingi • Mosel, Germany •

Inspiration : ‘it’s riesling…enough said’

Color : straw yellow, moves with ease and grace suggested limited sugars.

Aroma : slight sweetness, citrus, minerality, touch of smoke and a skosh of petrol.

Taste : stone fruits including slightly underripe apricot, nectarine, watermelon rind, fresh straw, baby’s breath (the flower). Minerals including wet slate and granite. Holds on the palate…fruits linger.

Big Takeaways

  • Prussian emperor owned vineyard, revived by Markus Mollitor in 2017. Single vineyard, Grand Cru status.

  • Netural oak fermentation & aging. 12% alcohol, 10 g/l RS (sugar).

  • Very fruit forward, sweet and tart with a lovely savory edge reminding of lardons served with strawberries.

Hints

if you have the patience…age it!
