Fèvre-Fèvre, Poggerino & David Hill

Grand Cru Chablis, Concrete Chianti Classico & Natty Oregon Riesling

Midnight Tasting September 1st, 2024

No. 1 • Marcel et Blanche Fèvre-Fèvre ‘Les Preuses’ Grand Cru 2022 • Chardonnay • Chablis, France •

Inspiration : ‘cozy sweater on a cool summer night’

Color : light, clean, pristine with a straw yellow color. Looks soft and pretty.

Aroma : beautiful nose, nutty, citrus, lemon, buttery shortbread, salty pine nut, chalk.

Taste : similar to nose, light lemon, nutty, vanilla shortbread, great mineraltiy with a lovely length and soft finish. Lingers but doesn’t saturated the palate.

Big Takeaways

  • From the Fèvre family tree…Gilles et Nathalie Fèvre making this wine (Marcel was Gilles great-grandfather).

  • Chardonnay from 2.2 hectares of vines in the Grand Cru vineyard of Les Preuses in Chablis, Burgundy France, seeing both stainless and oak.

  • Rich yet light; citrus, nut, butter and touch of vanilla with a lengthy yet clean finish. Beautiful light elegance.

Hints

Considered the most underrated of the Fèvres, this a great bottle to get without the culty prices.

Note that they have several different labels for their wine…Marcel et Blanche won’t be on all of the them.

No. 2 • Fattoria Poggerino ’Nuovo’ 2018 • Sangiovese • Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy •

Inspiration : ‘can go trashy or classy’

Color : quite translucent, ruby red, clean and pristine.

Aroma : strong aromas, pretty purple florals, rose, cherries, red berries, spice, tobacco and licorice.

Taste : dark cherries, spice, incense, tobacco, very fine yet drying tannins like black sands on a beach. Strong, present, powerful without tearing at your mouth and sitting you on your ass. Character driven with an ease to it.

Big Takeaways

  • Estate grapes on 11 hectares of organically grown newer vines, but surrounded by forests, olive groves and Tuscan beauty.

  • Done all in concrete, concrete tank fermentation and 12 months aging in concrete eggs.

  • Fun structured chianti with lots of character but easy going at the same time. Can be enjoyed in both low key setting or finer dining.

Hints

Works with both your midnight frozen pizza or your curated pork loin with specialty bacon and local salumi.

No. 3 • David Hill Winery ‘Last Pick’ 2021 • Riesling • Tualatin Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon •

Inspiration : ‘fuuuuuuck’

Color : same color as my shirt…warm yellow tone entering into gold with slight cloudiness that stays consistent throughout the bottle. Milky like quality reminding of an Opal.

Aroma : very fragrant, lots of acid, lemon, lime, yellow grapefruit, granny smith apple, touch of lychee juice.

Taste : lots of acid but with a roundness. Perhaps a touch of botrytis honey. Similar citrus from the nose on the palate, playful texture with slight drying tannins. Reminding of a sweet lemon iced tea or chamomile tea with a touch of honey.

Big Takeaways

  • 2nd line of David Hills, part of their Discovery Line. All Riesling from their estate, last picked (of 3 passes), done in stainless and acacia wood.

  • Fermented dry so 0.5 g/l RS, yet perhaps a touch of botrytis giving a skosh of honey on the palate.

  • Tons of citrus but with an incredibly soft and round body. So playful on the palate, you can taste the sweetness with it still being a dry wine.

Hints

Just get it…just get it.
